Your first consultation

Your first visit takes longer than subsequent visits. A complete case history is taken, which includes finding out every detail of the complaint you wish to have resolved. It also includes a full medical history and questions about your current and past lifestyle. Once you have had an opportunity to tell your story, and we are satisfied we have a thorough understanding, a physical and osteopathic examination follows.

The physical examination may be similar to what you experience with your GP or specialist. Based on your case history it may be necessary to perform various specific examinations E.g. Neurological, cardiovascular, primitive reflexes, abdominal. This is followed by an osteopathic examination. We will examine the area of your body that is causing you problems in great detail, looking at movement between structures (motion permitted), and unique to osteopathy the intrinsic movement of the tissues (motion present).

Unlike other professions our examination does not end here and this is a key point of difference that also makes osteopathy unique. The goal of an osteopath is to propagate health not merely treat a dysfunction. Our examination continues with quiet palpatory observation of the whole body as a single unit to sense the dynamic between the dysfunctional region and the health of the rest of the body. Promoting self healing requires an understanding of not only what is wrong in the problem area, but also how it has fallen out of tune with the rest of the body. Because it is this lack of tune that is preventing the body getting well by itself, as nature intended.

Once we have formed a clear picture of how your body is functioning we will explain this to you in language you can understand, and answer any questions you have. If we feel you can benefit from osteopathic treatment, we can usually give a quite accurate estimate of the number of treatments required. With your consent we will be able to begin treatment.

Follow-up consultations consist of less talking and more examining and treating. We will get an update of how you are feeling. Then we will re-examine before treating. This is because every osteopathic treatment is tailor-made and unique for you and your body's needs on that day. This is also a unique feature of osteopathy and accounts for its great outcomes. No two treatments you will have will be identical. Because if your prior treatment hit the spot, your body will have changed and something different is now required to keep it moving forwards towards tune and harmony. We are taught as osteopaths that during our whole career no two treatments should ever be identical.

We may also give a little or a lot of advice. For example if you are a mother bringing in an unhappy newborn, we may give you tips on how to manage your baby's problems in the interim while the treatment process takes effect.

The goal of an osteopath is to propagate health not merely treat a dysfunction.
